Christmas plants as gifts

Many of Christmas’s blooming plants can be arranged before being given as gifts. Here are some tips on how to brighten someone’s day with a floral arrangement.

Hyacinths are fragrant flower bulbs, similar to daffodils. There are several ways to make gifts from these plants:

• With a glass dome. Plant the bulbs in a shallow dish and cover the soil with curly white moss. Then, place a glass dome over the entire arrangement. This puts the flowers in focus, and if you’re sensitive to scents, it also reduces the fragrance.
• In a glass jar. There are many mini glass greenhouses that you can use to plant hyacinths. This creates an exciting yet elegant centerpiece.
• In a pot. Create a Christmas arrangement with daffodils, hyacinths, and other favorites in a beautiful pot. Simple to make, a joy to receive.

The color of the hyacinth depends largely on the temperature it is kept in. If placed in a warm spot, the color will fade, and if kept cool, the color will become more intense.

Some of the most common Christmas flowers are Christmas rose, amaryllis and poinsettia. What should you think about if you want to give these away as a gift?

The Christmas rose (Helleborus niger) is perfect to give as a gift. A tip is to buy a plant that has not already sprouted buds. Place the plant in a cool place and water the leaves to keep the soil evenly moist. The Christmas rose should be kept bright and cool indoors. It can be planted out in the garden in early spring.

Amaryllis (Amaryllis Hippeastrum × hortorum) is a bulbous plant seen everywhere at Christmas. Plant your own amaryllis bulbs, or buy one with buds to give away. Water sparingly before flowering and evenly during flowering. The plant lasts a long time as a cut flower, which makes it also perfect as a present or Christmas present.

The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is a classic at Christmas and you get it in both red and white. This plant fits perfectly in Christmas groups. Plant it in a basket with optional Christmas decorations and give it away in the garden. The Christmas star is happy to bloom longer. Does not like cold drafts or too much water.
