A moss wreath is a great option for fall, Christmas, and New Year's. You can create a simple and elegant base with moss that works for all seasons, or you can add and change decorations over time to match the mood of each season.
What You'll Need to Make a Moss Wreath
- Straw wreath base – available in different sizes at Plantasjen.
- Moss – we used green moss. It’s also possible to find nice moss in the forest, but make sure to follow the guidelines on how much you can pick and where.
- Plants – we used dried rye and ornamental onions from the garden.
- Decorations – we chose pinecones, a decorative bird, and small apples.
- Floral wire and wire cutters.
- Rope, ribbon, or string to hang the wreath.
How to Make a Moss Wreath – Step by Step
Step 1
Remove any debris from the moss before you start and fluff it up a bit. Choose the decorations you want.
You can decorate with anything you like, just pick what suits your style. Here are some tips:
Step 2
Attach the floral wire to the straw wreath base.
Step 3
Take fairly large pieces of moss and wrap them tightly around the wreath.
TIP: The tighter you wrap the wire, the smaller and neater the wreath will be. For a fuller wreath, wrap the wire more loosely and with larger gaps.
Step 4
Continue adding moss around the wreath base, making sure to cover both the inside and outside. Check the wreath from different angles to see if the base shows through anywhere.
TIP: To make the wreath extra full, you can add a double layer of moss. Gently fluff the moss with your fingers when you're finished.
Step 5
When you’re happy with the wreath, secure the floral wire on the back and cut it off.
Step 6
Now it’s time to decorate. We attached pinecones and apples to the wreath, but you can choose whatever decorations you like. Attach the floral wire to your decorations and wrap them around the wreath. Secure the wire to the back of the wreath base.
TIP: Grouping the decorations together gives a more elegant look. Experiment until you find something you like.
Step 7
Hang the wreath with a nice rope, ribbon, or string, which becomes a decoration in itself.
TIP: Once you're done with the wreath, you can remove the decorations and reuse the straw base next time you make a wreath. It's the perfect example of upcycling!
